About Valeriote’s Market

Our philosophy in business, as in life, is based on a strong sense of community. We work and play here. Dine, shop and are entertained here. We volunteer, teach, and help bring people together. Valeriote’s Market is an extension of our lives and established to support our community and offer the best products and services we possibly can.

The Valeriote’s Market we know today is a reincarnation of Valeriote’s Groceteria, established in 1910 by Michael Valeriote on Alice Street in the ward. After operating successfully for over 50 years, the store was sold and eventually converted into housing.

Fast forward to 2009, when local businessman Larry Valeriote saw an opportunity to purchase a thriving butcher shop on Yorkshire Street. Renaming the store Valeriote’s Market, Larry soon after expanded the store to include a full kitchen for prepared meals and baked goods. In 2012, Larry brought chefs Brian Schmeler and Stacey Kanelos onboard, who would subsequently purchase the store in 2019.

We’re fortunate to have some of the best farmers and producers in the country, and we’re proud to bring their food to your table. We strive to make these products accessible and affordable, and maybe change the way you eat!

Owners Brian Schmeler and Stacey Kanelos have a long history working together in some of the area’s best food establishments. Prior to running the market, they were involved with such projects as The Black Mustard, Appetizingly Yours Catering, and The Elora Mill. Both are classically trained chefs – Brian at Stratford Chef’s School, and Stacey at George Brown. Together they bring decades of experience in multi-cultural cuisine, baking, catering and butchery. They enjoy working with customers on cooking methods, techniques, and introducing even the most experienced clients to something new!

Valeriote’s is truly a family business. Larry’s daughter Alex continues to oversee the front of house and Brian’s daughter Maya rounds out the team.
